Border patrol became a band of robbers after the intensification of border inspections
North Korean border patrol, which used to moonlight by abetting smugglers, are having hard times recently, due to the Defense Security Command’s intensification of border region inspection and surveillance. To make up for their lost revenue, they resort to robbing the households at the border regions.
A source from North Hamkyung Provice said, “Recently as the inspection on border patrol forces began, patrol forces started to covet the possessions of residents. Because these soldiers cannot receive bribe anymore in compensation for their abetment of smuggling, they resort to robbery.”
According to the source, Defense Security Command intensified the inspection and surveillance on border patrol forces to stop their abetment of smugglers and North Korea escapees.
The source adds that, “Because soldiers rob due to their hunger, their inspection would not be effective as long as North Koreans overall cannot feed themselves sufficiently.”
He also thought that the abetment of neither smugglers nor North Korea escapees would not disappear. It would decline for a while only during the inspection period. “Although recently the abetment of smugglers or North Korea escapees decreased, smuggling still goes on now. As soon as the inspection officials are gone, they resume their abetment again.”
