A representative of families of 11 South Korean citizens abducted in 1969 by North Korea announced on Monday that the families would visit Geneva to meet North Korea's Permanent Representative to the UN. The trip would be an attempt to put pressure on the North to repatriate the 11.
The trip to Switzerland would involve delivering a letter to the Representative calling for the release of the 11. The group traveling to Geneva would also meet representatives of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Committee of the Red Cross in order to secure international support for the repatriation efforts. They also have plans to attend a symposium put on by Japanese campaigners on the abduction issue as well as to meet David Alton, a member of the House of Lords in the UK.
The 11 abductees were taken to the North following the hijacking of a flight to Gimpo Airport in South Korea. Most of the passengers were released, but the flight crew and seven passengers still continue to be held in the North.
