Recent flooding in June and July has left North Korea on the precipice of humanitarian disaster again. About 212,000 people are either homeless or are displaced because of the flooding with a further 169 confirmed as dead and 400 still missing. Around 65,000 hectares of farmland have been affected meaning an already precarious food situation in North Korea has been made worse. Massive amounts of food aid are required: a WFP report preceding the flooding suggested that aid is needed for as much as two-thirds of the population who are have ongoing problems with access to food. The WFP has already started preparing to send food aid, but it is obvious from the amounts being quoted in the press that a lot more is required to stave off another disaster on the level of the Arduous March from happening again.
