Kim Chol, vice minister of the People's Armed Forces, was executed in January according to intelligence sources. He was part of a purge started by Kim Jong Eun in an attempt to strengthen his claim to power. Other senior officers were apparently also executed.
It has been alleged that the reason for the execution was because Kim drank alcohol during the mourning period following the death of Kim Jong Il. The execution was apparently an attempt to force military leaders into submission.
The reports of the execution come at the same time that other sources have reported several demotions in the armed forces and governmental departments.
